Alluding to "the melancholy conclusion" of Ellis's last letter and expressing his deep gratitude for his service to Leyden during such difficult times; reporting the death of his cousin in the West Indies; praising Ellis's suggestion to include a map in the third volume of the Border Ballads but discussing the difficulties in printing it with the current edition, which "shall be out in a month," and hoping to include it in a future edition; discussing surveying in general.
